Rhea happened upon her husband, Saturn in flagrante delicto with Philyra, a wood nymph, at the very moment of climax. The deceptive old boy changed himself into a horse in that precise moment and fled the scene with his wife in hot pursuit.
Philyra discovered, as many a girl before her and since, that she was carrying the rascal’s baby. Of course, he never returned to shoulder his responsibilities.
Chiron was born half man, half horse. Even his own mother found him too repulsive to look upon and she absconded from the birthing suite.
Thus was Chiron doubly betrayed. At conception by his father and at birth by his mother.
His wounding was deep and vast. He was born of a god (Saturn) but he had an animal half to his being. This effectively rendered him neither acceptable to the gods or humans. He was rejected by society and raised by the Centaurs on Mount Pelion .
The Centaurs were a rough lot, known for their drinking, carousing and brawls. But they did nurture Chiron, whose sense of self and therefore self esteem had been damaged badly.
Chiron was a gentle soul. In time he became a great scholar. He is credited with innovations in Astrology, Medicine, Mathematics and Natural Healing.
One day while he was in his study a fracas broke out with the Centaurs. Although this was nothing unusual he decided to come out and take a look. Perhaps ask them to be quite. Hercules, his friend, had dropped by Mount Pelion for a few jars and he and the Centaurs were letting off steam by sending arrows through the air at random.
Unfortunately Hercules had just let go his arrow with a magic potion he had prepared to kill the Hydra when Chiron emerged into view. The arrow pierced Chiron’s hip causing a deep wound.
Hercules was remorseful but there was nothing he could do to take back the fateful moment.
Chiron was in a right fix with a wound from a magically poisoned arrow, which meant the wound would never heal. As he was a god he was immortal. He couldn’t heal and he couldn’t die. He was trapped with his wound.
His wounding intensified his understanding of the pain mortals suffer. He became an even better physician and astrologer. His fame as a healer spread throughout the land.
He was the healer with a wound he himself could not heal.
Finally, he hit upon an idea to release him from the agony inflicted accidentally by his dearest friend. He noticed that Prometheus was chained for all eternity for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans. Each day vultures came and pecked out his liver. Each night his liver grew back again. Chiron offered to take his place and die instead of him.
By choosing mortality, the best way he could think of to escape his suffering, he had to relinquish his god status. The gods on Mount Olympus agreed with his suggestion and Chiron walked willingly to his own death.
Astrology and Chiron
Chiron is one of the largest of the asteroids. It was discovered on 1 st November 1977 .
Since that time, which has been named by Barbara Hand Clow as the Return of Chiron, all types of natural healing has flourished. Chiropractic is named after him. The study of Astrology and its use as a healing tool has escalated. There has been tremendous growth in Homeopathy and Naturopathy.
It has become accepted wisdom that we are all wounded and that the responsibility for healing is an individual task. No longer can we delegate control over health matters to other people.
The Chiron placement in the chart is a significant part of a chart reading. Where ever it is placed is where the wound is located.
It is important to remember that Chiron was a great healer. We can see the nature of a person’s healing gifts by the Chiron placement. We can get an idea of the gift they have brought for the good of the planet.
It takes Chiron fifty years to circumnavigate the entire chart and return to its natal position. This makes the 50 th year a significant milestone in a person’s life when the nature of the wound often becomes clearer and when new healing opportunities can emerge.
When other planets pass over Chiron the pain will be felt and opportunities for healing will be presented.
Examples
Prince William
The prince has Chiron conjunct (beside) Venus in Taurus his fifth house. The fifth house deals with love affairs, sex, children and the Inner Child. Taurus, among other things is a very fertile sign.
We will never learn what is in his heart but this Chiron placement suggests wounding in the area of his love life and women, as shown by its connection to Venus. No doubt the constant glare of the media does little for his search for intimacy and fulfilment as far as sex and love affairs go. He may even settle for a woman he does not truly desire and love.
Losing his mother at such a young age was of course extremely painful. It seems that a crucial area of pain for him was actually loosing a female who gave him cuddles and close personal contact.
It looks like he will have plenty of children, at least one male. As Chiron is in his house of offspring it looks like the will exacerbate the wounding. This may be particularly so with a female child.
As life progresses his understanding of women and the Feminine will be where he can give his gift of healing the most.
Barack Obama
Barack has Chiron in Pisces in the first house conjunct the South Node (his past). The first house is the house of the self. His past (or past life) is a source of deep wounding. This is not so unimaginable when we consider his cultural history as he had to overcome many hurdles to attain his current position.
As a black man in the U.S.A. he has had to learn fast from the setbacks he must have and still endures. He knows first hand, at a deep gut level, what it is like to be discriminated against. This is his real gift to the nation and to the world. His healing gift is not something he just read about and feels strongly about. It is something he knows.
Pisces, ruled by Jupiter and Neptune, is the place where we are able to receive blessings from the gods. It is also the place that is the most difficult to define. The media and commentators are still trying to find his vulnerability. It’s not that he doesn’t have it or that, like Hilary he has learnt to cover it up. More likely his wounding is so vast that it is literally everywhere and formless making it difficult for the press to put into words.
John McCain
This man has Chiron in Gemini in the ninth house. The ninth house rules higher education, religion and long-distance travel. Gemini, ruled by Mercury, is about communication, short journeys and siblings.
There may be poor communication and relationship with siblings and this may have come about by travel by his parents in formative years.
He may have had to struggle to get his grades at university even though he is obviously a smart man. He was born out of the country for which he is running for president and some of his opponents have referred to this. This will have repeated a childhood hurt and wounding.
His gift to society will be facilitate the education of those whose college opportunities might be curtailed, as his was interrupted in some way. He can do much to help families stay together and create a home bringing stability and love.
